The Department of Health and Family Welfare (Nalavazhi Thurai) functioning under the Government of Puducherry is responsible for delivering quality health care in the union territory of Puducherry. The department is headed by none other than the Hon'ble Chief Minister of the union territory Shri N. Rangasamy assisted by a health secretary and a director.

The union territory is a leading health care base in South India with the presence of a lot of world-class health care facilities like Jawahar Institute of Post-Grauduate Education and Research, popularly called as Jipmer in Gorimedu area, Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital And Post Graduate Institute at Victor Simonal Street, Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences at Kalapet and many other trusted facilities.
Health in Puducherry

Puducherry is way ahead in a lot of national-level patterns pertaining to health care. For instance, the union territory features bright figures when equated to the national median when it is about health indicators. Primary Health Centres (PHCs)

Tertiary Care

Tertiary Care happens at the Government general hospitals, which play a determinative role in the health care facilities of the union territory. Teritary Care is the principal referral establishment for primary and secondary healthcare facilities for Puducherry. At present, Puducherry union territory houses eight Government general hospitals in Pondicherry, Yanam, Mahe and Karaikal region that offer specialty and super-specialty medical services to patients. As a matter of fact, almost 5200 patients are handled each day, and the infirmaries are fitted out with state of the art medical facilities like research laboratories, operation theatres and certified blood banks.

Preventive and Curative Health Care

The Department of Health and Family Welfare of Puducherry has introduced a lot of preventive and curative health programs for tuberculosis (TB), Hansen's disease Control (leprosy), vector-borne disease control (illness caused by an infectious microbe), cecity control (blindness) and dental wellness schemes and many other health programs.
